Calling Norfolk cooks and butchers: could you create the ultimate Porkstock sausage roll?


Porkstock 2017, Norfolk’s favourite family food and drink festival, is calling for cooks, professional chefs, butchers and bakers to create the ultimate Porkstock sausage roll which will be entered into a national competition in early 2018.

The Sausage Roll Off, held at the Red Lion Pub in Barnes, London, has become an annually anticipated event on the culinary calendar.  The competition invites cooks and professional chefs from around the UK to take part in a live cook-off; to create, roll and bake a dozen delicious sausage rolls.  Four of the rolls are judged by a team of food experts while the remaining eight are sold at an auction, raising money for charity.

The 2017 Roll-Off was won by Norfolk’s own Charlie Hodson, founder of Charlie’s Norfolk Food Heroes and Patron of the Porkstock Food & Drink Festival which takes place at the Royal Norfolk Showground on 14 October 2017.  Charlie’s award-winning sausage roll – ‘The Nelson’ – was a homage to locally sourced Norfolk ingredients and he’s gone on to recreate his roll on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch and a variety of foodie events.

Angus McKean and Claire Morgan, of the Red Lion in Barnes, have invited Porkstock to submit a sausage roll that represents everything fabulous about Norfolk food into the 2018 Sausage Roll Off.  The Porkstock Roll will be judged against sausage rolls created by high profile chefs from across the UK and will win its maker huge prestige.  The winner will also receive an overnight stay in London for two people.

Whilst the competition is open to keen amateurs as well as professional chefs, they must be prepared to travel to London and recreate their sausage roll in a professional kitchen in front of a large audience.

Shortlisted entrants will be contacted by Monday 10th July and must be available to present 12 perfect sausage rolls at the judging event on Wednesday 26 July, from 1.30 – 3.30pm at the Woodforde’s Brewery Tap, the Fur & Feather, Woodbastwick.

Porkstock Roll-Off Terms & Conditions

Entrants must be aged 18 or over and live or work in Norfolk.

Entries must be sent by email to by 12noon on Friday 30 June 2017.

Emails must include the following information about the entrant: Full name; Address; Age; Place of work; Job title; Contact number.

Recipes must be attached to the email in a Word or PDF document with name of cook/chef clearly stated at the top of the recipe

All ingredients listed must be grown or produced within 40 miles of the Royal Norfolk Showground

Norfolk pork, purchased from a local butcher, must be used

Proof of purchase will be required for all ingredients as evidence of provenance

Pastry can be short or puff and may be handmade or purchased from a Norfolk producer

Recipes must be the property of the entrant and not plagiarised from any source.

All entrants agree to participate in any and all advertising, promotion or other commercial activities relating to the competition and consent and agreesthat their photograph, image, likeness and voice may be used by Porkstock and the Red Lion, Barnes in all related promotional activity without any rights of prior approval or inspection.

Entrants must be available to take part in the Norfolk judging event on 26 July 2017 and the London judging in January 2018.

The winning sausage roll and its ingredients must not be publicised on any media prior to the London judging in January 2018.

The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

There is no cash alternative for the prizes offered.

Porkstock reserves the right to withdraw or amend the promotion at any time without prior notice.

Porkstock cannot accept any liability for any entries which are late, lost or incomplete.

Failure to comply with these terms and conditions will automatically render an entry void. These terms and conditions shall be governed and construed in accordance with English law.

The name and county/town of the winner will be available for one month after the judging by sending a stamped addressed envelope to the promoter Porkstock. By entering the competition entrants are sending their personal information to Porkstock who will at all times process an entrant’s personal data in accordance with the UK Data Protection Act 1998 and applicable laws.
